Hepatitis B:

Carrier rate 2-7%
India; Intermediate 2-7% (average 4%)
Burden of HBV: 57 million in India (Population 130 crores or 1300 million or 1.3 billion)

Commonest mode of transmission: horizontal via family contacts

The age of acquisition of HBV is an important determinant of outcome; the earlier the age, the higher the risk of chronicity (>90% in new-borns (vertical transmission), 30% in children aged 2–5 years and <5% in adults)

About 2/3rd are non-replicative in India

Commonest cause of CLD: Alcohol (Top 4 are Alcohol, HBV, HCV and NAFLD)

Commonest cause of liver cancer: HBV (around 40% of HCC)

80% of HCC are HBV or HCV related

  • CKD
  • Dialysis
  • Thalassemia
  • Immunosuppressed, on cancer chemotherapy
  • Health care workers
Hepatitis C
  • HCV prevalence 0.5-1.5%
  • Disease burden: 12-18 million
Transmission: Parenteral (Via Blood and body fluids) Same mode for HBV, HCV and HIV
  • Blood transfusion
  • IV drug abuse
  • Unsafe sexual practices
  • Sharing needles
  • Sharing razors in barber shops
  • Dialysis if not done carefully
